Temporary university buildings & universities

Flexible solutions for acute space requirements

Many universities in Germany are under increasing pressure to react quickly to changing conditions. Rising student numbers, new teaching formats, the ongoing refurbishment backlog in existing buildings and delays in planned new buildings mean that urgently needed rooms are not available or not available in time. At the same time, the requirements for university spaces are changing: hybrid teaching formats, project-oriented work or new study programmes require flexible usage concepts that often cannot be implemented quickly enough in existing buildings.

Against this backdrop, container buildings offer a functional and economically viable solution. They create additional space at short notice, for example for seminars, offices, laboratories or service facilities, and can be adapted, extended or dismantled as required. With short planning and construction times, predictable costs and modern technical equipment, they enable universities to remain operational even under difficult conditions and maintain ongoing operations without any loss of quality.

FAQ on container buildings for universities

The great advantage of temporary buildings in container design is the short realisation time. Depending on the size and equipment, they can be used within a few weeks. The containers are produced in industrial prefabrication, while preparatory measures (e.g. foundations, media connections) can be carried out in parallel on the university campus. This means that even more complex room solutions can be realised at very short notice. Ideally, however, a lead time of several weeks to a few months should be planned, especially for larger construction projects or authorisation requirements.

Temporary buildings can be largely customised to the specific requirements of the university. This starts with the room layout (individual, group or open-plan use) and ranges from acoustic solutions, lighting concepts and media technology equipment to barrier-free access and customised façade design. Uses with special requirements such as laboratories, workshops or library areas can also be realised technically and functionally. The buildings can be architecturally integrated into their surroundings or deliberately characterised as independent temporary structures.

Temporary buildings are generally subject to public building law. This means that a building permit is usually required for their construction. The specific requirements can vary depending on the federal state, building class and planned period of use. In many cases, however, a simplified procedure is possible, especially for short-term use. We are happy to support you in preparing the necessary documents (e.g. fire protection concept, statics, escape route planning) and accompany the authorisation process in coordination with the relevant authorities.

Focus on sustainability and energy efficiency

Universities are under increasing pressure to choose sustainable and energy-efficient building solutions. Container buildings offer clear advantages here: Their industrial prefabrication results in significantly less construction waste, and the use of materials is precisely planned and optimised. The standardised containers can be completely dismantled after use and reused at other locations or recycled, which conserves resources and reduces the environmental impact.

Modern container buildings today fulfil high energy standards. They are equipped with efficient insulation and can be easily combined with environmentally friendly technologies such as photovoltaic systems. Green roofs are also possible in order to improve the microclimate and further increase energy efficiency. In this way, temporary container buildings not only contribute to climate protection, but also help to reduce operating costs in the long term.
